About the Programme

The High School programme covers Grades 9 to 12 (ages 14 to 18). Through a challenging academic offering which includes the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), the IB Diploma Programme (DP), the Advanced Placement Program (AP) and the American High School diploma, we aim to equip our students with the intellectual and interpersonal skills to succeed in both their academic and professional careers.

Learners complete the IBMYP, first commenced in our Middle School, during grades 9 and 10. They then study for the American High School Diploma, to which they can either add the full IBDP or a selection of DP and/or AP courses. The ACS American High School Diploma is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). To complete it, students must earn a minimum of twenty credits during their four years of high school.

These credits may be gained across the following disciplines:

  • English
  • Social studies and world languages
  • Science and mathematics
  • The arts (fine art, music or drama)
  • Physical education
  • An elective of choice

The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP)

If choosing the full IBDP, learners will be required to study six courses – usually three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). Students must choose one subject from the first five study groupings listed below. The sixth subject may be an arts subject chosen from group 6, or the student may choose another subject from groups 1 to 4.

1. Studies in language and literature
2. Language acquisition
3. Individuals and societies
4. Experimental sciences
5. Mathematics
6. The arts or an alternate elective course

In addition, the IBDP also requires study and engagement in the following areas.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
This course is focused on developing interdisciplinary and critical-thinking skills.

Extended Essay
Students must select, research, and write an in-depth, independent essay of 4000 words in one of their six subject areas.

Creativity, Action, Service (CAS)
CAS is a fundamental part of the IB experience. It helps students grasp the importance of extracurricular activities as an integral part of life, and as a healthy counterbalance to the world of scholarship.

The Advanced Placement Program

The Advanced Placement Program

Students who choose to take AP courses can do so alongside regular High School Diploma courses and IB courses. All AP courses are one year in duration and most culminate in an exam administered during a two-week AP testing period in May. AP is a global credential. Universities around the world recognise AP when making admission decisions, course requisites, and awarding university credit. Qualifying AP Exam scores earn university credit in nearly all universities in the United States and Canada and are recognised in 60 other countries worldwide.

Scores of 3 or 4 in at least three, preferably four, AP courses fulfil admission requirements in many UK and European universities. AP courses are fast-paced university-level courses requiring strong reading skills and a commitment to independent learning. A high level of self-direction is assumed.

Our AP course offering for 2020/2021:

  • AP Biology
  • AP Statistics
  • AP US History
  • AP English Language and Composition
  • AP Spanish Language and Culture

From 2022, 12 AP courses and a full range of AP awards and recognition will be available.

ACS Doha Pathways

ACS Doha Pathways

ACS Doha Pathways offer our students career-enhancing opportunities to get ready for the lives they want to lead, ready for a world that needs global thinkers and doers. They will enhance the real-world learning we already offer at ACS, inspiring students to connect, explore and develop their own interests, in the classroom and beyond. Students of all ages will be able to access a wide range of educational experiences.

We are excited to work with a dynamic network of businesses, universities, cultural institutions and government ministries in Doha and beyond. These connections will help provide the knowledge, expertise and experience our students need to learn beyond the classroom and pursue their passions.

The pathways cover a range of subject areas, allowing students to tailor their educational experience to their interests and their chosen career path. These include entrepreneurship, communications, international relations, art & design and engineering.
