LAUREN HALEY, ACS EGHAM CLASS OF 2009
"Music is my passion, and it's incredible what you can achieve when you are given the right environment in which to succeed."
ANOTHER STRING TO HER BOW: WHAT LAUREN DID NEXT
With upcoming plans to open a new music school alumna, Lauren Haley looks back affectionately on her high school years at ACS Egham. For her, the school was a life-changing experience where she gained inspiration and confidence to pursue a career in music.
An incredibly talented musician, after graduating from ACS Egham, Lauren won a coveted place at the Eastman School of Music in New York to study violin performance and then went on to set up her music school Lauren Haley Studios (LHS) in Houston, Texas. This year she hopes to launch further studio spaces with multiple facilities to teach violinists and violists of all ages.
Lauren says: "ACS Egham showed me how impactful educators can be. Two teachers in particular influenced me the most: Irina Walters (music) and Susan Merrick (French)...
"I was so, so fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from them. While they were of course focused on helping me excel in my subjects, I realise in hindsight that along the way they were modelling effective teaching."
- LAUREN HALEY
“One trait I admire about Mrs Walters is her ability to bring the highest level of music education to students regardless of their prior musical experience. For my own studios, I wanted to collaborate with musicians who would similarly be able to support students of all ages and levels.”
Like so many teachers, Lauren looks back on her education; what worked, what didn't work, when making plans to support students. She recently revisited Egham campus to share her experiences with the students.
"Music is my passion, and it's incredible what you can achieve when you are given the right environment in which to succeed. It was a joy coming back to campus to share my experiences with students and be reunited with my incredible teachers."
Bob Costa, ACS Hillingdon 1998 - 2000
"I had the chance to study with dozens of students from Asia, Europe, Africa and other areas, which provided me with an enriched sense of the world and how others perceive events and values. That was invaluable.”
EDITH BUKOVICS, ACS COBHAM CLASS OF 1997
"ACS offered so many nice options. There were a lot of opportunities to create your extra curriculum as well as your school curriculum, and I think all those things are very important for being a freelancer and an actor"
Neil Vora, ACS Cobham class of 2000
"My studies at ACS prepared me perfectly for this work because of the diverse range of classes I took that instilled in me an understanding of the complexity of many of the global issues we face."
